Richmond Race Preview

AJ ALLMENDINGER, JTG DAUGHERTY RACING, RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
    Track: Richmond International Raceway
    Event: Toyota Owners 400
    Date:  Saturday, April 26th
    Time:  7 p.m. ET
TV / Radio:  FOX / MRN / SiriusXM

    TEAM QUOTES:

Take it easy: "We ran pretty good and finished in the top-15 (15th) last year at Richmond International Raceway,” Allmendinger said. “We started off massively tight and we were plowing, but ended up with a decent finish. I do actually like racing at Richmond a couple times a year. It is a tough track to prepare for during the weekend. You do not practice at all at the same time of the race. It makes going into the race difficult. You have got to be real easy on your rear tires. At the same point, you have got to get the car to turn. I always think it is fun the way the race plays out because I think the driver can make a difference by not using up the rear tires. It is a cool short track that really is not like any other track so it makes it fun to go to because it is unique. I thought last year we were decent. So far, our short track programs have been pretty good. Hopefully, it will be the same.”

Time off: “It was awesome to have some time off this past weekend,” Allmendinger said. “I didn’t do a darn thing. I played golf and sat on the couch. It was nice to have a break in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule for me and my guys. The deal for me is the less I travel, the happier I am.”

Recharging: “Every weekend is a new weekend for us,” Allmendinger said. “I feel like it is a chance for us to continue to grow. For my guys, they have been busting their butts all season long. Forming the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) alliance and the switchover to Chevy (Chevrolet) was done relatively late last year. It came together kind of mid-December. My guys have been non-stop working. You could see they were a little worn down. Between the west coast races and all the rain we had - for a team like ours - it puts a lot of strain on my guys. They have done such a good job to build good cars and get us to where we are at. A break for them to get away from racing and be with their families this past weekend was really good for everyone.”

Grilling: "On race day, I like to do a barbeque for the guys," Allmendinger said. "There's plenty of time to do that since the garage opens later in the day. So, we’re going to do that. We will probably grill steaks and chicken over Kingsford Charcoal and have some BUSH'S Grillin' Beans as a side of course. It's a good time."

Have a shot:  “We are ready for Richmond International Raceway and think we have a good shot at a top-10 finish at that track if everything goes as planned,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We feel like two of our strongest races this season took place at Phoenix International Raceway - we just had some unfortunate stuff happen during the race and our result did not reflect our effort - and Martinsville Speedway obviously. Richmond follows along in that direction setup wise. It is one of our strong suits I believe. We are confident we can make a strong showing there. AJ has a couple top-10s there and has run fairly well at Richmond in the past.”

Come a long way: “In our most recent race at Darlington Raceway, we were a little off,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Brad Daugherty said. “Last year, we would have finished 35th instead we finished 15th. Those are the types of results I have been waiting on and I have been looking for over the years. Looking back, we just did not have the affiliation or the ability the last couple of seasons to get to where I thought we should be no matter what we tried. Now, we have opportunities to run extremely well. There have been some glaring mistakes we have made, but we are going to fix those things.”

Things are lining up: “The technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing (RCR) has been phenomenal,” Daugherty said. “A lot of times, most every place we went last year - outside the short tracks - we were out-powered, out-resourced and we were in a tough situation before we even left the shop. We did not have what we needed to be competitive and that is no longer the case. RCR and ECR Engines have done a great job for us so far. We have been reenergized and AJ is a talented young man with a lot of ability. It was just the right timing for him to step into the car. Bobby (Labonte) did a great job for us over the last few seasons and really helped keep a ship afloat that was really struggling. Now, we have been able to step up our pieces and parts. AJ’s going to get better and going to continue to grow as a driver. We think we are lining up for some big things. We have to keep taking one step forward each week and hopefully we can survive the dog days to have a great year. We have a good vibe over at the shop right now and it is exciting.”

Got five on it: “It’s the little thing that adds up throughout the day,” Daugherty said. “We have eliminated the lack of horsepower, the lack of aero and the lack of information. We have got that. Now, it is a matter of focusing on small things that is going to get us in the mix at the end of the day to give us a chance on that last pit stop for my guys to tighten up their belts and really go out there focused and get AJ off pit road and get him back on the track and get him back in the opportunity for the last green flag. One of these days we are going to put ourselves in a green-white-checkered situation and I’m putting my five dollars on AJ. He will absolutely wheel that thing. All I ever ask him, if we get to that point, is to bring back the steering wheel."

Great employees: “We are going forward,” Daugherty said. “My guys are working really hard. We have got some great people that believe in what we are trying to do. We don’t have 550 people in our building, but we have got some people that are dedicated to what they do. I am proud of all of them. They dig real hard all day long. It’s tough for teams our size to get a little bit of spotlight, but we are working towards it and trying our best to earn it.”

Element of surprise: “The battle for us is to do 10 race segments and try stay in the top 20 as we go through the dog days and continue to battle,” Daugherty said. “We think we are going to shock some people and hopefully surprise some people by the end of the season.”

    Darlington Race Preview

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 CLOROX® CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING DARLINGTON RACEWAY PREVIEW

    Track: Darlington Raceway
    Event: Bojangles' Southern 500
    Date: Saturday, April 12th
    Time: 6:30 p.m. ET
TV / Radio:  FOX / MRN / SIRIUSXM

    TEAM QUOTES:

Power Of Bleach:  “It's great to have Clorox return to our No. 47 Chevrolet SS at Darlington Raceway,” Allmendinger said. “I don't know about you guys, but I'm so ready for spring after a long winter and Clorox is on our car at the right time. We know things are going to get messy at Darlington Raceway and there are bound to be a few Bleachable Moments during the race, but we are confident that our Clorox car will clean up the competition.”

Tough track: “Darlington Raceway is definitely a tough place,” Allmendinger said. “I will be interested to see how fast these cars go around there. I didn't race there last year. It’s one of those places that when you have the car dialed in it is pretty cool. It is such a fast track. As far as the history behind it, the track has not changed a lot other than the repave a few years ago."

Earn your money: "It’s one of those things where you go into the night at Darlington Raceway knowing you’re going to earn your money," Allmendinger said. "I feel like it is one of those places if you get around it well, you have accomplished something. At the same point if you struggle there, there is nowhere to hide. The history of the track and what it means to the sport of NASCAR makes it really cool to drive through the tunnel there. Again, it is one of the races I actually missed last year. Even though I haven’t really been that good there in the past, I really enjoy it.”

Night racing at its finest: "I always like the night races," crew chief Brian Burns said. "It seems like there is a lot of excitement for more of a fan viewing entertainment experience especially at a track where there is a lot of history like Darlington Raceway. It is one of those places you go to where lining up on pit road there is a little more to it than a usual race weekend."
Not atypical: "Darlington Raceway does not fall into a cookie-cutter style track," Burns said. "Luckily, one of our RCR (Richard Childress Racing) alliance teams – the No. 13 car – has tested there. So, we feel like it is really going to help us. We feel fortunate to have a little bit of an advantage unloading at a place like that with some recent test data. It gives us direction on which setup to start with there.”

Minimizing mistakes: “I’ve been very pleased with the way we have run,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Brad Daugherty said. “We have got speed, which is something we haven’t had in two or three seasons. I am happy with the direction we are going with the cars and the team. We just have to work harder at minimizing mistakes. We have made some mistakes that have cost us five or more positions at some of these tracks. We will polish up on the areas we need to and make some noise throughout the season.”

Close to home: “The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway is a little bit of a breather in the schedule because it is closer to home,” Burns said. “There is not as much travel time for the team and it really nice for all the guys to be able to get back home quickly. It is a Saturday night race too and it gives us a rare Sunday at home. Following Darlington, we have an off weekend coming up too and I think we're all looking forward to that."

    Texas Post-Race Report

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 BUSH'S® BEANS CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY POST RACE REPORT

    Track: Texas Motor Speedway
    Event: Duck Commander 500
    Date: Monday, April 7th
    Time: 3 PM EDT
TV / Radio:  FOX / PRN / SIRIUSXM
    Start: 33rd
    Finish: 23rd

    TEAM QUOTES:
AJ Allmendinger finished 23rd at Texas Motor Speedway in the No. 47 BUSH'S® Beans Chevrolet SS with a hole in his grill and the left front crush panel knocked out after running over debris from the Dale Earnhardt Jr. machine approaching lap 12 Monday afternoon. After the seventh race of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Allmendinger is 20th in the points standings. He is 86 points out of first held by Jeff Gordon and 30 points out of 10th place.

The race winner was Joey Logano with a 0.476 margin of victory over Jeff Gordon. There were 18 lead changes among nine drivers and seven caution flags for 49 laps.

“Because of the accident in the beginning of the race with Dale Earnhardt Jr., we had to come down pit road and clean off the grill and pull on the fenders and that set us back because there’s not much opportunity to make up track position on long green runs at Texas Motor Speedway,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We didn’t know it at the time, but there was a hole in the nose of the No. 47 BUSH’S
® Beans Chevrolet SS that none of us saw and the left front crush panel was blown out as well (causing drag). Both of those things happened when the No. 88 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) wrecked.

"AJ said he hit some pretty big debris," continued Burns. "Without the damage from the No. 88 car, we would have had a totally different race car. Basically, the damage is like putting a parachute on the front of the car.”
“The car was not very good, but I didn’t know there was damage to the car until after the race and Burns told me about it,” AJ Allmendinger said. “I knew I hit some stuff when the wreck happened with the No. 88 car. We didn’t know, but there was a hole in the nose and the crush panel was knocked out. It's tough after having two pretty good weeks. We’ll learn and grow from our race at Texas Motor Speedway and continue to strive to be better each week.”

    Family Inspiration:

Beans have always been a comforting part of traditional Hispanic meals. Each generation of moms want to continue this tradition, but they also want to bring a unique touch to the beans. Bush's Cocina Latina® is inspired by regional recipes and kitchen wisdom handed down from the real experts . . . the women of your family; moms, grandmas and aunts.

We start with the traditional slow-cooked beans and then add in just the right ingredients and seasoning to give the beans a modern flair that you and your family will love. It's a delicious way to carry on the bean tradition or create a new one!

Last week we asked race fans to tell us why they thought they were the biggest fan in NASCAR. After receiving several great entries we narrowed it down to a story from David Fisher and the famous piece of NASCAR sheet metal that got away. The Western North Carolina-native has been a lifelong fan of the sport and will actually be in attendance at this weekend's race in Martinsville so he can see his picture on AJ's car as it circles the track and races to the front! Have a great time David and thank you for being a dedicated NASCAR fan, we are proud to have you as our #47FanOfTheWeek!

Last week's #47FanOfTheWeek contest was almost as simple as guessing how many jelly beans are in a glass jar. All fans had to do was send us their best guess with how many BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans are in the BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans can that JTG Daugherty Racing team member Zach Case was holding in a photo we posted. To give themselves a better chance at winning, we suggested they run out to their local grocery store and buy a can or three of BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans and count each delicious bean for themselves then send us their guess.

The guesses were all over the board but the winning guess came within 11 BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans of the correct answer. Jason Nance from Greensboro, NC made the BOLD guess of 670 beans and our can had 681 BOURBON AND BROWN SUGAR flavored beans.

Congratulations Jason! Your photo will be featured on AJ Allmendinger's car this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway!

Look for our next contest to be announced tomorrow, you might be our next #47FanOfTheWeek!

    Texas Race Preview

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 BUSH'S® BEANS CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY PREVIEW

    Track: Texas Motor Speedway
    Event: Duck Commander 500
    Date: Sunday, April 6th
    Time: 3 PM EDT
TV / Radio:  FOX / PRN / SIRIUSXM

    TEAM QUOTES:

Intermediate track:  “I think our intermediate program has been pretty good and we’re ready for Texas Motor Speedway,” AJ Allmendinger said. “Hopefully, I’m up there battling in the BUSH’S Beans Chevy for a top-10 finish if not a win."

Week-to-week:  “Ultimately, I try to focus on each weekend leading up to that race. Especially with the new race packages, every weekend is different, but at the same time I’m excited to go to Texas," Allmendinger said. "That’s because of the success we’ve already had and the speed we have shown at the mile-and-a-halfs and the things that the guys are doing at the shop right now makes us feel like we have learned over the last couple of weeks how to make our Texas car quicker just with some of the updates we have done. Some of the ideas we have come up with on our own and with the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) alliance and everything combined, I’m looking forward to it."

Fruits of labor:  “We spent so much effort with planning to make a big transition like we did over the winter and you certainly hope it comes together quickly,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “To see it come together in the first five to six races and start to get the finishes we deserve has been huge for us and definitely gives us more confidence in all the decisions we made. Watching the race at Auto Club Speedway a couple weeks ago, I think I walked 12 miles in a small circle behind the pits and paced holes in my shoes during that race. We have had really good speed this year. We have just had circumstances the first four races where we did not get the finishes we deserved. I think a part of becoming a great team is that you learn how to win.”

Desired results:  “We are way more competitive than what our results have showed,” Allmendinger said. “Something bit us or something happened out of the ordinary or bad luck or misfortune the first few races. Auto Club Speedway was the first race where we feel like that didn’t happen and then we had a solid run at Martinsville Speedway. So, we finally are getting to show everybody what we knew already. We are a small team, but we are given all these resources now and we are just as capable as a lot of bigger teams. That top-10 at California did help us with our confidence and reassuring us that we can do it. At Daytona International Speedway, it was a brake failure in a parts flaw and we had to change a caliper during the race. At Phoenix International Raceway, we had a clutch issue with the setting being off just a little bit and the car jumped off the jack during a pit stop and that bit us. Bad luck at Bristol Motor Speedway pitting a lap before the caution comes out and put us a few laps down and we were never able to recover from it. A lot of little things like that hurt us.”

Tire management:  “The teams are pushing so hard right now to find every little advantage that is possible out there and any amount of grip you can find over the next competitor makes a huge difference,” Allmendinger said. “At California (Auto Club Speedway) a couple weeks ago, I feel like our race team did a good job to avoid those tires deals. It’s hard to say about Texas Motor Speedway, but I don’t think we will have any problems there. We go to Texas twice a year and at Fontana (Calif.) you go there only once in March. You don’t see the track again for a whole year and then you come back again with obviously the rules changes with the ride heights. I don’t think we will see tire problems at Texas, but all the teams are trying to find every advantage they can get.”

The season thus far:  “That’s what’s been really great about the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season so far. The first six races, there have been six different winners. You really don’t know whose going to be quick. The field is so tight this year. I feel like the depth of the field – at least over the last four of five years that I’ve been in NASCAR – it’s probably the best it has ever been.   You can have anywhere from 20 to 25 cars that have a legitimate shot at winning the race. It really plays out with strategy and what you can do to get track position. Texas is going to be a great race."

Alliance continues to be beneficial:  “The biggest thing is that with the new rules package without the alliance (with Richard Childress Racing), I think we would be really behind right now because there are so many different spring and shock combinations that you can do and I don’t think anybody has really nailed it yet,” Allmendinger said. “The alliance has really helped us to get settled into that and have more cars to bounce notes off of and so we can figure out which direction to go. I think that has been huge in helping us. Having more horsepower and better race cars always helps, but also I think us learning each other myself, Brian (Burns) and the engineering staff is crucial. It’s important to go in a direction I’m comfortable with each race weekend and using what we get from RCR, but also saying we know this is what works for us is a big deal. I really feel and I hope as each race goes on that we are going to keep getting better. California (Auto Club Speedway) was good because in a way it got a little bit of a monkey off our back saying, ‘Okay, we got that number now. We finally got that top-10 finish.' To say, 'Hey, if we do the right things we can run up front.’  It’s just the same thing every weekend trying to work on being better. The Fridays are really important for us right now because that is where we unload and we struggle at times and it puts us so far behind. Then during qualifying, we are trying to figure out what we need to do and it sets the tone for the weekend. If we get better on Fridays, our weekends as a whole are going to be a lot better.”

Latin flair:  “Over the past few weeks, we have had some fun with the fans as we sampled and promoted some contests featuring BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans®,” Allmendinger said. "But this week, we are switching gears and adding a little spice to our menu. My crew and I will be conducting a little taste test to determine which flavor of BUSH'S® Cocina Latina beans we like best. Since we are racing in Texas, the same weekend that the Final Four will be taking place right down the road, and everything is big in Texas, we decided to make a Texas sized platter of nachos and put one can of each of the four Cocina Latina beans on each corner of the platter and conduct our own little Final Four tournament of flavors. I like lots of spice, so I can already tell that I will lean towards the Pintos a la Diabla but you can always tone down the spice with cheese and sour cream if you want. My mouth is already watering just thinking about it."

    FAST FACTS:

AJ Allmendinger has 10 starts and two top-10 finishes at Texas Motor Speedway. His average start is 18.800 and his average finish is 21.600. His best finish there is 10th-place (twice - 11/2/08 and 11/6/11).

    Martinsville Post-Race Report

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 BUSH'S® BEANS CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY POST RACE REPORT

    Track:  Martinsville Speedway
    Event: STP 500
    Date: Sunday, March 30, 2014
    Started:   15th
    Finished:  11th

    TEAM QUOTES:

AJ Allmendinger, who led the STP 500 in the No. 47 BUSH'S Beans Chevrolet at lap 237, was so close to delivering another top-10 finish for JTG Daugherty Racing as he took the checkered flag in 11th-place at Martinsville Speedway. The finish advanced Allmendinger six positions to 16th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings. He is only 75 points out of first place held by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

There were 33 lead changes among 12 drivers (a new track record) with Kurt Busch pulling off the victory in the sixth race of the season. There have now been six different winners in the first six races of the season.

“All and all, it was a good weekend for us,” JTG Daugherty Racing crew chief Brian Burns said. “The little bit of testing we did here definitely paid off. Coming here we felt like we had our head around the setup a lot better. It paid off in the race. AJ fought back hard every time we lost positions. He got us right back up there. We were hoping for a top-10, but that was pretty close. The pit stops were great by the guys today. We were just fighting that the engine-mapping, it was a little off and it was costing us positions on pit road. I know how good ECR is and they will work on that and when we come back we won’t have to worry about that next time.”

“It was a really good race and I was really proud of all my guys,” AJ Allmendinger said. “At times on the long runs, we maybe were the fastest car out there. It was fun. I had to be careful not to burn the tires off early on, which made me defensive and then we would get rolling and the No. 47 BUSH’S Beans Chevrolet SS was pretty good. Then it was just trying to keep up with the track with the sun coming out and things like that.  I thought we did a good job overall. I used the car up there at the end so I didn’t have much left. The pit stops by my guys were pretty solid. We’ve just got to work on the mapping on pit road. We struggled badly with that. When you are bucking all the way through pit road and you can’t tell if you were at pit road speed or five below it was killing us. An 11th-place is a little disappointing, but to bring the car home in one piece and have another decent points day is not a bad day for us.”

“I think the more you run up front the more you learn,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “We had really solid pit stops all day. We averaged 12.50 seconds and I will take that all day long. That one time we tried to stay out on tires, the No. 41 (Kurt Busch) that won the race, had the exact same strategy we did. We just got up there in the marbles and got some junk on our tires and that was unfortunate. It kind of changed the complexion of our day. AJ drove a heck of a race and fought his way up to 11th. I couldn’t be any prouder of him and the team getting there.”
