Martinsville Race Preview

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 BUSH'S® BEANS CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY PREVIEW

Track:  Martinsville Speedway
Event: STP 500
Date: Sunday, March 30, 2014
Time:  1 PM Eastern
TV / Radio:  FOX / MRN / SIRIUSXM

TEAM QUOTES:

Site of career-best finish:  “Martinsville Speedway has always been a favorite place of mine for a couple reasons,” AJ Allmendinger said. “One of the main reasons is because it’s where I posted my career-best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finish. I finished second there in April 2012 after starting 27th with Penske. I have that top-five finish and a couple top-10s there. It’s just an action-packed track and a fun race for the fans to watch. I know it’s a fun track for me and it’s one of the tracks I love going to.”

Testing provides starting point: “We went up to Martinsville Speedway for a two-day test, but really didn’t get to test as much as we would have liked to because of all the rain,” Allmendinger said. “We did a few runs and were able to get a really good starting point so that we will unload decent. Between tracks like Phoenix (International Raceway) and Bristol Motor Speedway, we have had really good speed in the car. Hopefully, we can take our notes from the test and stuff we have been doing to have good practice sessions and a strong qualifying effort. We’re coming off a top-10 (eighth) and would like to keep our momentum going at Martinsville Speedway.”

Fired up:  “AJ is probably quite a different driver than he was four or five years ago,” Burns said. “He’s come back and he’s got a fire under him that I haven’t seen in a lot of people. It’s pretty cool to be with someone like that right now.”

“AJ’s a smart guy,” continued Burns. “When we first got him and looked back at his history we thought ‘Man, we are going to wreck some cars, but he’s probably going to run up front.’ Actually, he is a lot smarter, more defensive, aware and alert than we thought he was. He is able to take those big chances and make those big moves that so far we have not been involved in any big wrecks. It is kind of a shame this year that we haven’t had the results to show our efforts.  All the tracks we have been to so far, we have been really competitive and the top-10 at California (Auto Club Speedway) is kind of the first time that something crazy did not happen to us to where we could prove to our team owners that what they did in the off season has paid off for them.”

Night and day:  “It’s been a night and day difference for us this season,” Burns said. “For instance at Auto Club Speedway, I cannot think of the last time JTG Daugherty Racing showed up at a place like that and was that competitive. It’s probably the first time we have even finished on the lead lap there to be honest with you. It is just a tough place where motor and aerodynamics are such a big deal and this year we have got both of those in our favor. It is a pretty big difference.”

Martinsville is circled on the calendar: “JTG Daugherty Racing’s history is that we’ve actually been pretty strong at some of these short tracks with Martinsville Speedway being one of them,” Burns said. “We took the time last week and used one of our tests that NASCAR allots us and we went and tested at Martinsville. It rained for about a day and a half and we only got about a half day of testing accomplished. However, I can’t remember how many times we would get through practice on the first day of a race weekend and wish we had an extra hour for work to do. We feel like we have already got that out of the way there. We are going to unload really well. We have higher expectations about Martinsville Speedway than we ever did about California (Auto Club Speedway) if that tells you anything.”

Eye-opening experience:  “Initially, going into this season we picked five or six tracks where we knew we were going to run really well and honestly Auto Club Speedway probably was not one of them for us," Burns said. "It kind of opens our eyes that we can run a lot better than we realize. We are contenders just because we have got these tools that Brad (Daugherty) Tad and Jodi (Geschickter) gave to us in the off season. It’s nice to know you can run with the big boys there and have just as high expectations as them.”

Confidence boost: “I think you always wonder how you stack up against some of these people and a top-10 finish last weekend at a place like Auto Club Speedway automatically raises the bar for the rest of the season because we know we have the capability to do it,” Burns said. “Your standards have been raised and it makes it a huge confidence booster. I think that anybody that has been a part of this kind of deal knows a race season is an emotional roller coaster. You have a couple bad weekends and the one thing you need to just turn it around to steer the ship in the right direction is a good finish and that’s what sets the pace for the next few weeks.”

Not on a desert island:  “Going into this (RCR technical alliance) I thought there might be a chance where we wouldn’t get much info, but that’s not the case at all because Richard Childress Racing treats us just like their teammate,” Burns said. “If we have questions, they send people over immediately to help us out. During post practice meetings we go in there with their drivers and their crew chiefs and we all talk with an open notebook. It’s so nice not to be on a desert island like we have been in the past where you felt like you are off on a setup and not sure if you are going down the wrong path. Now, we have this plethora of information from them that helps steer us back on the right path. It has paid off tremendously already for us.”

Benefits of having an alliance: “We’ve really been pleased with the technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing (RCR),” said JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter. “It just helps a ton having teams to bounce ideas and notes off of one another and the motor program has been phenomenal over there. With the testing rule limiting us to four tests per team, we sat down with RCR and said which four tests should we do that will benefit the group the most. We picked places where AJ has a really good feel and great track record. Then we get the same benefit from Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon, Paul Menard and, of course, Furniture Row is in the alliance. That’s one real example where we are able to test at a number of different tracks by all of us sitting down as a group and deciding where we should test so we can cover them all.”

Team motto:  “We created a team motto this year called ‘All In’,” Geschickter said. “We’ve got some pictures of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston on the canvas pasted on our doors that everyone sees as they come and go from the shop. I think the guys have realized we’ve got a world class driver in the car.  He’s fast, he’s aggressive. He really wants it. Everyone is excited. If we do our part, I think we will continue to get better with this Richard Childress Racing alliance with AJ in the car. I’m not going to lie. The first four or five weeks on a team of our size going back and forth from the West Coast and having so many cars prepared early in the season can be a little bit of a grind.  We need to take a little break. Maybe we need to do some extra dinners and cut the tension sometimes. Like any family, when you get tired it’s easy to have a few flare-ups. So far, it’s been pretty calm and everyone is pulling together. I’m excited about that.”

Throughout the season our JTG Daugherty Racing "#47 FAN OF THE WEEK" will have their photo featured on AJ's car.

Each week we post the "#47 FAN OF THE WEEK" theme, with instructions on how you can enter. The best fan submission to us via the JTG Daugherty Racing social media pages will be chosen the following Monday and will be featured on AJ Allmendinger's #47 car during the next race.

Last week we asked race fans to tell us why they thought they were the biggest fan in NASCAR. After receiving several great entries we narrowed it down to a story from David Fisher and the famous piece of NASCAR sheet metal that got away. The Western North Carolina native has been a lifelong fan of the sport and will actually be in attendance at this weekend's race in Martinsville so he can see his picture on AJ's car as it circles the track and races to the front! Have a great time David and thank you for being a dedicated NASCAR fan, we are proud to have you as our #47FanOfTheWeek!

This week's #47FanOfTheWeek contest will be almost as simple as guessing how many jelly beans are in a glass jar. Take a look at the attached image and send us your best guess with how many BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans are in the BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans can that JTG Daugherty Racing team member Zach Case is holding. To give yourself a better chance at winning, run out to your local grocery store and buy a can or three of BUSH'S® Grillin' Beans and count each delicious bean for yourself then send us your guess. The particular can in the image is "BOURBON AND BROWN SUGAR" flavored.

We'll have AJ Allmendinger himself post the correct number on Sunday so make sure you send us your guess before the race starts!

THIS MIGHT BE THE TASTIEST CONTEST YOU ENTER ALL YEAR!

JTG DAUGHERTY RACING AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY POST RACE REPORT

Track: Auto Club Speedway
Event:
Auto Club 400
Date: Sunday, March 23, 2014
Start:  18th

Finish:  8th

TEAM QUOTES:

AJ Allmendinger earned JTG Daugherty Racing their best finish of the season with an eighth-place finish during the Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway with his No. 47 Charter Chevrolet SS.

Good speed, strategy, teamwork and pit stops showed what this team is capable of when it all comes together.  The top-10 finish advanced Allmendinger to 22nd in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings, 68 points out of first held by Carl Edwards.

Kyle Busch won the event with Kyle Larson, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart rounding out the top-five finishers. There were 35 lead changes among 15 drivers and nine cautions for 42 laps. The margin of victory was 0.214 seconds.

“I think overall this was our best weekend in general and I’m really proud of the guys,” AJ Allmendinger said. “Friday was a struggle and we didn’t unload well, but then we turned things around and had our best Saturday ever with our practice sessions and that led into a solid race for us on Sunday. The race was overall good and the No. 47 Charter Chevrolet SS was consistent. It felt good on long runs if it would go green long enough.
“Things went well for us on addressing tires and going easy on them because there were some guys that had some problems,” Allmendinger continued. “We were an eighth to 12th place car and we were finally able to put it all together and get the finish we deserved. We know we still have work to do, but to have a solid day means a lot. I think it is finally putting a whole day together is the big picture here. We have had decent speed all along since the season started, but we just couldn’t put a full race together to be able to do everything right to have the results to show for our efforts. The little stuff is what we have to keep fine tuning so we don’t beat ourselves. This top-10 finish gives us momentum and confidence that we can put a solid car together and we can be consistently up front."
“California (Auto Club Speedway) has always been a tough track for me and it’s the best I’ve felt around that track ever,” Allmendinger said. “The lines David (Green) was helping me to run and the communication from Brian Burns (crew chief) has been the best communication on what I needed to do and where I needed to go. It was just solid. Finally, we get to look at that stat sheet and say we can do it and here’s proof. The good thing is that we earned it. We were there all day. It wasn’t luck. The way this program is going is in a good direction and we are figuring out what we need to use from RCR (Richard Childress Racing) and what we can do on our own better. I’m excited to see how things unfold these next few weeks.”

“I’m really proud of the efforts from everybody,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “AJ never backed down and never gave up. He just kept digging and got us a top-10. We definitely feel like we are all headed in the right direction. We have known we can run this good, but just have not been able to post the results. We have known it and we are getting things worked out right. To be able to showcase what we are capable of at Auto Club Speedway is a big deal for a small team like this. Before, we would have struggled to stay on lead lap and now we come away with a top-10 finish and at a track that AJ is not crazy about because of his past there. We did everything we needed to do today and we took care of the front end. We stuck to our plan to take care of tires and it paid off. This sport can be an emotional roller coaster and this finish really gets everybody motivated and our morale up heading into Martinsville Speedway.”

“Sometimes it takes a while for things to come together and on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, we were able to put everything together and finish in the top-10 like I think we are capable of each week,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “Now, we travel to Martinsville Speedway this week. The team was able to test there a little. They made a few runs that were enough to collect enough data to give us a starting point so we can unload closer. That way they are just fine tuning when we get there and we will be more competitive.”

Last week we asked for a little help from NASCAR fans, as we were on the lookout for a new "spotter"... Our regular spotter, David Green is normally stationed high above the race track, guiding AJ Allmendinger through the field as he races his way towards the front. Since David was so busy spotting for AJ and having to keep track of the #47 car racing around the track at 200 mph, we thought it would be a good idea to add a second spotter to the team. Trying to spot our sponsor's logos should be pretty simple since they are such easily recognizable brands that every NASCAR fan probably shops for every week! We think it was the easiest job anyone could ever apply for!

We had a few good applicants but it became clear that sometimes the best spotters come from way out West and Eli Hinds from the Great State of Washington was able to identify just what we were looking for!

Eli has a keen eye and he knows what it takes to identify a great bunch of sponsors, pair them together and put them on four wheels! Whether it's putting America's best brands together on a race car or in a shopping cart Eli found the perfect combination! That is why he is this

    TEAM QUOTES:

California love: “California, it’s so nice there,” AJ Allmendinger said. “For the most part, the weather there is really nice. It is beautiful scenery whether you’re from Northern California (San Jose) like I am or if you go down to Southern California where we are going to race. It’s just a beautiful state.”

“California is a little different,” Allmendinger continued. “The state is almost like it is two different states whether you are from Northern or Southern California. I definitely love where I grew up and where I was raised. I spent 21 years there and still love going back home especially when it’s time for Sonoma (Raceway) because that’s closer to my home. It is, it’s different because you get somebody that says, ‘Oh yeah, I’m from California’ and then they say ‘Southern California’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, yeah that’s a different state, I’m not from there.’ We all have pride in where we are from. I'm looking forward to racing in my home state on Sunday with Charter on board.”

Racing all over the state: “With my mom and dad it was always a family thing whether we were going to races or we were go-kart racing,” Allmendinger said. “Growing up through the karting ranks when I was younger, I did a lot of races in California at so many tracks within a three hour radius. It was fun each weekend. There were times where we went to different tracks during the weekend where there was a race on a Saturday and we would go to a different track to race on Sunday. I just loved being able to share that with my parents. At the time, you’re always thinking I want to be big time racing. Now, I look back at it and the time I got to share with my mom and dad was something very special.”

Focused on progress: “I think we bit off a lot over the winter,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “There are a lot of different processes working through the Richard Childress Racing engineering system. We beat ourselves the first two weeks, but it was all process stuff that we can fix that is in our control. We took care of it at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and had a top-20 at a mile-and-a-half, which showed progress as we went into Bristol Motor Speedway this past weekend. As long as we continue to show progress, I think we will get to where we want to be and be ultra-competitive this season.”

Versatility:  “Since the season kicked off, we have been at a different type of track every week," Geschickter said. “That is why this is the toughest sport in the world. You are presented a different challenge every week. Having teammates to test with and share notes will certainly help our learning curve that will translate into speed.”

Tough sport: “It’s tough to run in the top-20," Allmendinger said. "I’m not the most patient person and I’m trying to preach that to myself and to the race team as we continue building. At Phoenix we had a fast race car and had a clutch problem and fell off the jack and that cost us a top-10 or top-15. We’re not going to get there overnight, but I like the direction we are going in. You can’t just go to first right away. The last couple of years the team has been 30th in points and Tad and his wife Jodi (Geschickter) and Brad (Daugherty) took a huge step in trying to make the team better by having the RCR alliance and that’s already paying huge dividends for us. Just in the knowledge we are gaining, especially with the new rules package with the ride heights and trying to figure out which direction these cars are going. The way I look at it, we can be a top-20 car every weekend and minimize our mistakes. That’s how we keep building. We had a problem at Daytona (International Speedway) and Phoenix (International Raceway) and fixed those problems at Vegas (Las Vegas Motor Speedway). We didn't have the finish we wanted at Bristol Motor Speedway after some bad luck, but we did finish inside the top-25. Now, we turn our focus to Auto Club Speedway.”

       22nd
      Finish:  25th

      TEAM QUOTES:

AJ Allmendinger was on path for his best finish of the season during the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway until an untimely caution pinned him three laps down right after pitting for a routine pit stop. He fought hard to recover as many positions as possible before time ran out and brought home his No. 47 BUSH'S Grillin' Beans Chevrolet in 25th-place. The race was won by Carl Edwards after there were 20 lead changes among 12 drivers and 12 caution flags for 95 laps. Allmendinger is currently 25th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings, 81 markers out of first held by Brad Keselowski.

“It wasn’t the finish we hoped for, but we came away with a top-25 finish at Bristol Motor Speedway with our BUSH'S Grillin' Beans Chevrolet,” co-owner Tad Geschickter said. “We’ll learn from it and go on to Auto Club Speedway. The guys have a pretty long week ahead of them with testing at Martinsville Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday and they also have to turn the truck around to head out to California. It will be a busy week for everyone and I appreciate all the hard work everyone is putting into this race team.”

“The positive is that we had a fast car again,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We just had some really bad luck getting stuck right after pitting when the caution came out and caught us laps (three) down. On a positive note, to have the bad luck we did and still pull off a 25th-place finish is probably something we couldn’t have done last year. As a team, we will get stronger. We’ve just got to get rid of the bad luck. We’ll get there.”

“At times the car was fast,” AJ Allmendinger said. “We were able to drive up through the field into the top 15, but I’m not sure why we got so tight. The first time I chewed the tire up and not sure what was going on after that. I really feel like we are getting closer. The guys worked really hard all weekend and Sunday was a long day for everyone. I appreciate all of their efforts. I just need to be better for them.”

Last week we we challenged race fans to "GO BOLD OR GO HOME" and that we wanted to see them "FAN UP" by sharing a shot of themselves enjoying BUSH’S® Grillin’ Beans® for a chance to be our Fan of the Week—and to have their photo ride with AJ Allmendinger at the race in Bristol this week... We are happy to announce that Matt and Jake Brennick were chosen as our #47FansOfTheWeek and had their photo featured on AJ Allmendinger's car at the big race in Bristol this weekend. Since David was so busy spotting for AJ and having to keep track of the #47 car racing around the track at 200 mph, we thought it would be a good idea to add a second spotter to the team. The person we were looking for had had great vision and foresight, trying to spot our sponsor's logos should be pretty easy since they are such easily recognizable brands that every NASCAR fan probably shops for every week! We think it was the easiest job anyone could ever apply for!

We put together a quick list of the requirements and began taking applications for our new "spotter": https://a.pgtb.me/cn7X50

We are selecting our winner today and we will make the announcement tomorrow afternoon so watch our Twitter and Facebook pages for the results!

      GOOD LUCK!

      TEAM QUOTES:

A different look: "Keeping with the grilling theme, we have BUSH'S Grillin' Beans front and center on our No. 47 Chevrolet SS at Bristol Motor Speedway," AJ Allmendinger said. "I like nothing better than to get together with family and friends, hang out and grill out. We grill some chicken and I have the hookup to bring some BUSH'S Grillin’ Beans.

      "
My family means a lot to me," continued Allmendinger. "I am an only child and when I was growing up, my parents were at every race. In fact, they mortgaged their house three times so I could do what I wanted to do. That’s why I’m proud to have the BUSH'S name on the No. 47 car. As a family owned company, they understand how important family really is."

Reflecting first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start: “Bristol will always be a little bit special to me because it is the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race I made,” Allmendinger said. “I enjoy it, but like I have said before it is just a tough place. You fight for 500 laps around there. You can do everything right and still have something go wrong. It’s tough, but enjoyable. I did the first race there last year and had a decent run. Hopefully, we can keep building and learning going into that race and start off pretty good and have a good weekend.”

Feast or famine: “I just enjoy it - - it’s Bristol (Motor Speedway),” Allmendinger said. “You walk into it and every time you walk down the banking and look down into the coliseum you think ‘This is an amazing place.’ At the same time, for a driver it’s a tough place. I have had some decent runs at Bristol and I have had some runs there that kicked my butt.”

Developing a baseline: “Having an alliance helps when you have someone test there (Bristol Motor Speedway),” Allmendinger said. “Obviously, you would like to be the person to test every track. I think it is just about getting a baseline of where we are in general and that’s what these first six to seven races are. It will be good. Hopefully, we have some momentum going into Bristol. We are definitely making the cars faster each weekend. We have a long way to go too.”

Learning step-by-step:  “I will be the first one to say I’m not the best at taking things step-by-step,” Allmendinger said. “I do know that we are getting better and we are learning. We are right there with the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) cars. We did not get the finish we wanted at Phoenix International Raceway, but we had one of the best speeds out of all the cars. And, we were right there this past weekend at Vegas (Las Vegas Motor Speedway). We’ll see what we’ve got this weekend at Bristol.”

Got speed:  “We will rule Daytona out because it is a different race, but the last two weeks we have had speed in the car, which is positive for sure,” JTG Daugherty Racing competition director Bobby Hutchens said. “We have not capitalized on it yet. We feel like we had an eighth to 12th place car at Phoenix International Raceway a couple weeks ago and had an unfortunate thing happen in the pits with the clutch. At the end of the day, I think our raw speed is quite better this year compared to last. We just have to figure out how to put a car under AJ that will stay with him and also not make the small mistakes we have made on the mechanical side.”

Climbing the charts:  “I was talking to the guys yesterday,” Hutchens said. “In the years I’ve been here, we have not traditionally been at the top of the board. We were seventh on the test day at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and then on practice Friday we ended up ninth and then we backed it up by qualifying and finishing 18th. I think those are all positives things we can take moving forward into Bristol Motor Speedway. At the end of the day, I think we have improved in a lot of areas. We have still got a lot of room to work.”

Maximizing positives: “We have not done any testing for Bristol Motor Speedway, but one of our alliance partners went there and tested,” Hutchens said. “They felt like they had a really good test. All of us will be feeding off of that data. That is something we did not have last year. We are growing accustomed to looking at the data and understanding the differences between the drivers, crew chiefs and engineers and how things are set up and done. We are sifting through all of that and so far our guys have done a good job. They started working on some of that last week to get us ready for Bristol. Hopefully, by utilizing the alliance program we will be able to unload a lot closer than what we have in the past. We did not have the luxury of having a teammate or anybody to talk to before. I feel like that is going to be a pretty big positive for us when we start practice on Friday at Bristol.”

East bound and down: “From Las Vegas to Harrisburg, N.C., it is about 2,200 miles,” said JTG Daugherty Racing transport driver Paul Icenhour. “I arrived at the race shop this morning. We have a second driver for the transporter so we drove straight through without stopping. I will be able to spend a little time at my house sometime today and then come into the shop on Wednesday to get everything turned around to head back out this time for Bristol, Tennessee. Hopefully, we will be loaded up that day and I can leave early Thursday morning to park haulers at 7:30 p.m at Bristol Motor Speedway.”

      Event: Kobalt 400
      Date: March 9, 2014
      Start:  18th
      Finish: 18th
Next race: Bristol Motor Speedway (3/16/14)

      TEAM QUOTES:

A smooth race for AJ Allmendinger and his No. 47 Kingsford Chevrolet SS is just what the JTG Daugherty Racing team ordered for the Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in the end they capped off their day with an 18th-place finish. Allmendinger is currently 21st in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings, only 70 points out of first place.

Brad Keselowski won the third race of the season as leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. ran out of fuel coming to the checkered flag. There were 21 lead changes among 10 drivers and only four caution flags for 18 laps.

“It was a respectable day and we came away with an 18
th-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon with our No. 47 Kingsford Chevrolet SS,” Allmendinger said. “We were bad on restarts because we were struggling with grip; we were really loose. However, I thought during the middle of the race we were pretty decent and late in the race as well. We also were able to keep up and get our lap back that we lost. All and all, we finished the day on the lead lap and did not have any mistakes or mechanical problems and it’s a step in the right direction heading into Bristol Motor Speedway this week.”

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is not my best track and actually I think Sunday’s finish may have been my best finish there,” Allmendinger continued. “We are getting there as a team. I’d love to have it all at one time, but the positive is that we are competitive each week. We are not quite there yet where we want  to be and where I think we should be. We are getting close. We have got speed in the car. We will just keep digging away.”
“Overall, the race at Vegas was a good day for us,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We went into the race saying, ‘At least, we need to not make any mistakes.’ I feel like that was a well-earned 18th-place finish with the No. 47 Kingsford Chevrolet SS.
“I cannot remember the last time where we came to a big track like Las Vegas Motor Speedway and finished on the lead lap,” Burns continued. “So, it’s definitely progress. Our pit crew did a great job and did not make any big mistakes. That’s all I asked of everyone and that was to basically do the simple things right and they did that. Everybody delivered. We just wanted to get through a clean weekend like this and start turning things around. We’ve got a good group of guys that work really hard and we’re looking forward to good things to come from this team.”

      Las Vegas Race Preview

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 KINGSFORD® CHARCOAL CHEVROLET SS
JTG DAUGHERTY RACING LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY QUOTEBOOK

      Coverage Begins/Race Start: 2:30 PM / 3 PM EST
      TV/Radio: FOX / PRN, SIRIUSXM

      TEAM QUOTES:

Good time for grilling: "We've got Kingsford Charcoal on our Chevrolet for the first time this season," Allmendinger said. "It's the perfect timing because Daylight Saving Time (Sunday, March 9) is around the corner. What are you going to do with your extra hour of daylight? It's a great opportunity to get out and grill."

Thoughts on Vegas:  “I mean it is Vegas,” Allmendinger said. “It’s always a great crowd. Being in Vegas is always a fun time too and I enjoy going there. Because it is the first mile-and-a-half track, we are wanting to see where that program is since we do so many races at those types of tracks. I am looking forward to it because it is another chance to keep moving the team in the right direction. Hopefully, we can build some momentum.”

Gauging the program:  “Vegas is a place where I have struggled a little bit,” Allmendinger said. “It is one of the fastest mile-and-a-half tracks that we race on. I did not race there last year and I am not sure what this new car will feel like. I am glad we have a four hour test session on Thursday to work the kinks out and see where our mile-and-a-half program stands.”

More track time:  “I think for our single-car team, it is really important to have the extra time on track,” Allmendinger said. “It’s significant because it is leading into the track that we are going to race on. It is key to have a good four hour test to have a nice starting spot for the weekend. We have only had one test so far. So, this is really good for us.”

Gaining confidence:  “Going into Vegas, we feel like the stuff that we’ve worked through with RCR (Richard Childress Racing) has given us a lot more confidence,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “We have the notebooks to look at from RCR and know how to really benefit from this alliance deal. There is a lot of potential there. Now, we have got to put a whole race together to see the results.

“The alliance has been really good,” Burns continued. “Just being able to get their feedback and share their notes and how they feel about things and bounce ideas has been vital to the success of our program. I think it is really helping our team. Maybe you don’t see the initial speed right away or the results, but I think as the year goes on, it is going to help us become a better race team.”

Enjoying the new qualifying format:  “We did the new qualifying format for the first time last weekend at Phoenix International Raceway and it’s fun,” Allmendinger said. “It’s like anything that’s brand new, you’ve got to work the kinks out. I like it and I think it makes it exciting. It goes down to the last second. Whether you are trying to make it to the next group or you are going for pole, it’s good. It gives you a couple shots at it. When you get to certain tracks like Atlanta for example, you only have one run because of tires.”

“It kind of surprised me that as soon as qualifying started at Phoenix everybody jumped out there to try to get a good lap,” continued Allmendinger. “I don’t know if it was because of a big cloud that was over the track at the time. I think each track is going to be a little bit different until you do this eight or ten times and you figure out what strategy is the right thing. Temperature is obviously a big deal. In that half hour, if you feel like it’s going to cool down a little bit, you may want to go out a little later. In figuring it out, you’ve just got to go to each type of track. That’s what’s great about the NASCAR schedule, the first five or six weeks – we went from a superspeedway (Daytona International Speedway) to a flat one-mile Phoenix International Raceway and this week is Vegas, which is a real fast mile-and-a-half. After Vegas, we have high-banked short-track racing at Bristol Motor Speedway and back out west to Fontana (Auto Club Speedway), which is a two-mile track and then a Martinsville (Speedway) short-track. We’ve just got to get through all those different types of tracks and see how qualifying plays out at each track.”

      FAST FACTS:

AJ Allmendinger has four starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His average start is 20.0 and his average finish is 28.5. Allmendinger’s best finish at Vegas is 19th (3/6/11).

      Date: Sunday, March 2
      Coverage Begins/Race Start: 2:30 PM/3 PM

      Start: 25TH
      Finish: 26TH

      TEAM NOTES AND QUOTES:

Clutch problems for AJ Allmendinger derailed his chances for a strong finish in his No. 47 Clorox Fraganzia Chevrolet SS that crossed the finish line 26th at Phoenix International Raceway. Kevin Harvick won the second event of the season that had 14 lead changes among eight drivers and eight caution flags for 38 laps.

"It’s the same thing that happened at Daytona International Speedway," Allmendinger said. "If I’m on it (the clutch) for a short amount of time – it’s not like I’m doing anything different – it starts to heat up and starts engaging. The first stop it did it and that’s why I stalled it. That’s why there was a problem the first time because it was starting to move and then the second one we are just sitting there. I’ve got the clutch ready to go and I could feel the thing start slipping and it fell off the jack."

"The car was really good," Allmendinger said. "It seems like even our worst practice days we can make the car better for the race and that's what I like about this team. If we could have got some track position, our lap times at worst we were a 15th place car and at best we were around the edge of the top five. Take the positives out of it, I don't like giving away a good finish for a good car like that. At least the car was solid. Hopefully we’ve got something to go to Vegas (Las Vegas Motor Speedway) and it’s in one piece.”

"We're still trying to figure out exactly what happened to the clutch," crew chief Brian Burns said. "I think it might be a pedal positioning issue that we need to figure out what AJ likes better there. Other than that, we were very surprised about how good the car was. I think being able to use the RCR (Richard Childress Racing) camp's notebook helped. We actually leaned towards the No. 31 car and you see how good they finished. We felt like we were a little stronger. Barring nothing bad happening, we definitely had a lot of potential to finish up front.

"The second stop is where the issue was," Burns continued. "It was something with the clutch and the car jumped forward and knocked it off the jack and that’s the problem we had. It’s something minor that can cause a big issue and unfortunately the race didn’t play out to where we could get back onto the lead lap."
